The Myths
- It is often cited that the family is a long time farming family in the area, this is incorrect as late as 1980 the main base of operation was in Gordon Head. There are a number of family farms in the area with a history of not only farming in the community but significantly contributing to the growth of the community. In recent times none have asked the people of Central Saanich to give them such a large financial windfall.
-
Contrary to many peoples popular belief more residential developments do not reduce the tax load, if this were the case Vancouver would have the lowest taxes in the province.
-
Subdividing to preserve farm land, this was also the cry of the Vantreight family in Gordon Head, when one drives through Gordon Head it becomes apparent they were not successful there. It is understand the family used this cry as a justification for land development twice in the last 50 years; the subdivisions in Gordon Head were one of the reasons for the ALR being formed.
-
The threat to subdivide the remain property does not appear to be a reasonable probability it is doubtful the ALR will allow any substantial splintering. The dog in the manger approach to land ownership and the holdings spread throughout the peninsula may actually be contributing to the current challenges for the Vantreight family. The inefficiency of numerous operations over a large area must be a very high cost.
